We had a chance to have a chat with Clive Farrington and Edwin Alzate of Elektrik Gem (EG)- An electro combo with an eclectic attitude and lots to say…musically and personally!

- The electronic music scene is quite challenging, mostly because of the fierce competition. How do you manage to stay innovative and fresh?
EG - By going out! What are people singing along to and dancing to. We’ve always been involved since Kraftwerk exploded onto the scene and then the Hacienda in Manchester paved the way for bands like Joy Division, K-Class, 808 State and the birth of Acid House, plus DJ’s like Laurent Garnier. At least one of us lived through this period!!!
- What do you think are the 3 fundamentals for a great track? (I.e. the hook, the beat…)
EG - It depends on the music, but if it’s Dance Music then the Kick (Loop) and bass-line! In other genres, then lyrics are always wonderful to be able to sing along to. Especially on long car rides!
- Do you perform live gigs? If so, do you prefer the stage or the studio?
Edwin - Clive plays live all the time with his “When In Rome” stuff. He just did 3 shows last year in front of 17,000 in Mexico City. 15,000 in Tijuana and 4,000 with Grammy Nominee Aleks Syntek.
EG -We have yet to perform live because we are in the studio working on this album but we’re very excited to play live. I think as a musician playing live is the best feeling in the world and making the music is the process leading up to it.
- What are some artists you look up to?
EG - A lot ! A little bit of everything!
Clive – Kraftwerk are still a group to be looked up to both visually and sonically. I saw them at Hammersmith Odeon and was getting bored about 15 minutes into their performance. Everybody started to get a little upset that they had dressed what we thought were showroom dummies and sat them at the machines to look like them!! The dummies suddenly burst into life and of course it was they!! They had not moved a muscle or even blinked for 15 whole minutes!!! Showmanship in EDM that will never be surpassed!!! On the flipside, The Clash at Manchester Apollo on their White Riot tour were fabulous!
I first heard Rocket To Russia by The Ramones at this gig and that was and still is a gem! DJ’s Laurent Garnier, Tiesto and Armin Van Buren are the fellas to look up to! The Killers because Edwin says so!!
Edwin- The Killers have always been the band for me but besides that, M83 has a great sound, Steve Aoki is a hell of a performer, The Bloody Beetroots have an amazing live show, Afrojack can’t stop releasing bangers and Clive Farrington is as professional as it gets lol!
- Any future plans (releases, touring…)?
EG - Yes! We have a lot of interest in Brazil and Mexico but our first US Gig would probably be in the spring here in California. Just to test the waters but that just depends when this album is done and dialed in. We’ve been pretty busy, but the demand has been high and the response from the fans has been mind blowing. We just started this side project January 1st and it’s been a roller coaster already. We’re excited! We are releasing our music first to our biggest fans and delivering them through our newsletter.
- Anywhere where curious reader can check out your music?
EG - Yes! Its all on our website. www.elektrikgem.com and we are actually giving away our songs before we release them to our newsletter subscribers. The music really is for them to enjoy and they keep us motivated.
